Warm Outlets and Switches
Electrical fittings should be at room temperature. Heat means resistance where there should be none, and resistance where there should be none is how electrical fires start.
What is normal
A dimmer switch that is slightly warm when running a substantial lighting load. Dimmers dissipate heat by design. When office and field activity need to be reconciled, handling multiple clients efficiently is one option for keeping workforce records organised.
A plug that is warm after running a heater, a kettle or a vacuum cleaner for a long period — noticeably warm, not hot, and cooling within minutes of unplugging.
A transformer or charger that is warm. The device, not the outlet.
Everything else should be at ambient, and that includes the outlet body, the faceplate, the switch, and the panel cover.
What is not
An outlet that is warm with nothing plugged in.
An outlet or switch too hot to keep a finger on.
A faceplate that is warm across its whole area rather than just around a plug.
Any warmth at the panel.
Or a plug that stays hot after the appliance is removed.
What to do
Unplug what is on it.
Switch off the breaker for that circuit — not the main, unless you cannot identify which. The panel labelling makes this quick.
Leave it off and call. A hot outlet with the power still on is a fire risk that continues while you decide.
And do not use the outlet again to see if it recurs. It will.
What causes it
A loose connection, either at the outlet's terminals or where the circuit was connected upstream. The commonest cause by a distance, and it worsens with time because heat loosens connections further.
Back-stabbed connections. Some outlets accept a wire pushed into a hole rather than clamped under a screw. These loosen over years and are a known source of exactly this fault in homes of a certain age.
Overload, where a circuit carries more than it was designed for without the breaker tripping because the load sits just under the rating — frequently a lead doing work an outlet should do.
Corrosion, which in this climate affects outdoor and garage circuits particularly.
And a worn outlet, where the contacts inside no longer grip a plug firmly. A plug that falls out of its own weight is the visible version of the same problem.
The half-hour check worth doing once
Go round the house with the back of a hand.
Every outlet, every switch, the panel cover. Back of the hand rather than fingertips — more sensitive to temperature and less likely to grip anything.
Note anything warm, and note anything with a loose plug fit or visible discolouration around the slots.
Thirty minutes, once, and it finds the fault that has been developing quietly for two years.
