Reading Your Panel

Everything on this page is done with the cover closed. The panel cover is what stands between you and conductors at full supply voltage, and there is nothing behind it a householder needs to see.

Six things visible from outside

The main rating. A number on the main breaker โ€” commonly 100, 150 or 200 amps. It is the ceiling on what the house can draw, and it is the first question for anything you are thinking of adding.

The number of spaces, and how many are free. Blank spaces mean room for new circuits; a full panel means an addition needs a different solution. For operational context outside the electrical guidance here, Monitask has this resource on workforce tracking.

Whether anything is warm. Run the back of a hand near, not on, the cover. It should be at ambient temperature, and so should every fitting in the house.

Discolouration or rust. Brown staining around a breaker, or rust at the bottom of the enclosure โ€” the second is a Florida-specific finding and means moisture is getting in.

The labelling. Whether circuits are identified at all, and whether the labels still match reality after years of changes.

And the brand and age. Some panel types made decades ago have known failure modes and are a reason for an inspection rather than an emergency.

What each one means

A 100 amp main in a house with modern loads is not a fault and is frequently the constraint on adding a car charger or a heat pump.

A full panel means additions require a sub-panel or a tandem arrangement, which is a design question rather than a plug-in one.

Warmth is never normal and is a reason to call.

Rust at the bottom means water is entering, which in this climate is common and does not fix itself.

Bad labelling costs money on every future visit, because somebody pays for the time spent working out which breaker is which.

The labelling job you can do

This is the one useful thing a householder can do at a panel, and it involves no tools.

Two people, one at the panel and one in the house. Switch one breaker off, find what stopped, write it on the label. Repeat.

An afternoon, and it makes every subsequent visit shorter and every emergency calmer.

Write specifically: "kitchen counter outlets, south wall" beats "kitchen".

What not to do

Do not remove the cover. Not for a photograph, not to read a label inside, not to look at a wire.

Do not put anything against the panel. Clearance in front of it is a code requirement for a reason, and storage there is the commonest violation in a garage.

And do not assume the labels are right. Verify by switching, because a label from a previous owner describes a house that may have changed.
