Outdoor electrical work in Southwest Florida ages faster than the same work almost anywhere inland. Three things do it, and they act together.

What the climate does

Humidity drives moisture into any enclosure that is not properly sealed, and condensation forms inside covers as temperature swings.

Salt air, near the coast, corrodes terminals and hardware — including stainless, given long enough. When office and field activity need to be reconciled, workforce analytics software is one option for keeping workforce records organised.

Sun degrades plastic covers, gaskets and cable sheathing until they crack, at which point the first two get in.

And storms add mechanical damage, flooding and debris impact on top.

What to look at, twice a year

All from outside, nothing opened.

Covers. Cracked, chalky, missing, or not closing fully. A weatherproof cover that will not close is providing nothing.

Staining or rust streaks below any outdoor box or fitting — a sign water has been getting in and out.

Cable where it enters a wall or a box, for cracking in the sheath.

Fittings that have moved — pulled away from the wall, hanging, or with the conduit separated.

And the GFCI test button on every outdoor outlet, which is the one action here that is both a check and a protection.

What trips outdoor GFCIs

Water, mostly, and that is the system working.

A trip after heavy rain is expected behaviour from a device doing its job in a wet enclosure.

A trip on a dry day is different and means moisture is inside something that should be dry, or an appliance is faulty.

Repeated trips in dry weather are a fault to find, and replacing the device with a plain outlet is the thing not to do.

Before a storm

Know where the main is and whether you would use it. Cutting power ahead of flooding is a decision better made early.

Unplug and bring in what you can — outdoor appliances, pumps that will be submerged, anything on an extension lead.

And afterwards, do not restore power to anything that was under water, indoors or out, until it has been checked. Water-damaged equipment can look completely normal.

What needs a professional here specifically

Anything at a pool, spa or dock. Water and electricity in a place where people are barefoot and wet is a distinct hazard category with its own requirements.

Anything on a boat lift or seawall.

Landscape lighting that has developed faults, because low voltage does not mean the supply side is low voltage — and permitted work has an inspection behind it.

And any outdoor circuit that has been flooded, which is a replacement question rather than a drying question.

The short version

  • Humidity, salt air, sun and storms act together, so outdoor fittings here have a working life rather than a permanent one
  • Twice a year, from outside: covers, staining below boxes, cable sheathing at entries, fittings that have moved, and the GFCI test button
  • A weatherproof cover that will not close fully is providing no protection
  • A GFCI tripping after heavy rain is expected; tripping on a dry day means moisture inside something or a faulty appliance
  • Before a storm, know where the main is, bring in what you can, and never restore power to anything that was submerged
  • Pools, spas, docks, boat lifts and flooded circuits are professional work, not maintenance
